Breast augmentation, also known as breast enlargement or breast enhancement, enhances the size and shape of the breast by inserting implants. The technique can also help restore a loss of breast volume from previous breast-feeding or weight loss. A breast uplift, or mastopexy, can be done in conjunction with a breast augmentation, if necessary.

Breast Augmentation with Implants

Breast augmentation with implants, medically referred to as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure using either saline or silicone implants to add fullness to the breasts, giving them a size more proportionate to your body frame. Patients often consider breast augmentation for a number of different reasons, including:

• Dissatisfaction with current breast size
• Correction of breast asymmetry
• Replace lost volume after pregnancy
• Reconstruct the breasts after mastectomy or injury

Breast implants come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and types. Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation (enlargement) surgery typically begins with an incision on the underside of the breast, in the armpit, or around the areola (the dark-pigmented region surrounding the nipple). The implants will be placed either behind the chest muscle or directly beneath the breast tissue, depending on the placement that you and our plastic surgeon have decided upon before the procedure. Incisions are made as carefully and discreetly as possible to minimize any visible scarring. The entire procedure typically takes about two hours or less and is usually performed under general anesthesia. Breast augmentation can be performed on an out-patient basis.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Some discomfort and pain can be expected after breast augmentation surgery; however, this can controlled with medication. Patients can also expect some degree of swelling, bruising, and a sensation of numbness to affect the breasts and nipples during the first few weeks after the procedure. Most patients are able to resume normal daily activities within the week following surgery. Breast augmentation patients should continue to have mammograms after surgery. A special mammogram will be necessary to see around the implants for the most accurate results possible.
