Plastic Surgeons in Sarasota Say Doctor-Patient Communication Is Essential for Successful Results

Sarasota Plastic Surgery Practice on Breast Augmentation and Lift Consultations.

According to the most recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), breast augmentation is the most popular surgical cosmetic procedure performed in the U.S. with almost 300,000 performed in 2010. With breast lifts also among the most performed procedures in the past year, Sarasota plastic surgeon Dr. Jeff Scott and his partner Dr. John Leikensohn say proper communication during a breast surgery consultation is one of the best ways for patients to help achieve the desired results due to several important factors.

At their Tampa Bay plastic surgery practice, Dr. Jeff Scott and Dr. John Leikensohn say patient consultations are an essential preliminary step in the cosmetic surgery process and a top priority in patient care, particularly in breast-related procedures as they become more and more popular. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) shows in its latest statistics that breast augmentation and breast lift procedures combined account for almost 25% (386,134 of the 1.6 million) of the total cosmetic surgical enhancements performed in 2010. Drs. Scott and Leikensohn say that because breast surgery requires such an acute eye for aesthetic shape and personal preference, taking care as a patient to communicate properly with one’s surgeon can significantly enhance one’s results and satisfaction.

Performing approximately 300 breast augmentations and 100 breast lifts per year, Drs. Scott and Leikensohn say they have encountered patients who know exactly what they want from a procedure and also patients who are looking for a professional opinion during their consultation. They say patients who are considering a breast lift or breast augmentation in Tampa Bay are typically looking to correct droopiness (ptosis) and/or create a more perky, full appearance. Dr. Scott says because each patient has different goals, discussing with one’s doctor exactly how they would like to look ensures the highest quality results are achieved.

“It basically boils down to the position of the nipple related to the breast inframammary fold and also if there is excess skin and breast glandular tissue ‘bottoming out’ below the nipple/areolar complex. Some women definitely know a breast lift is needed and come to my office requesting it. However, those that have less ptosis often are not sure. Keep in mind that a large percentage of women undergoing a breast lift also have implants placed to provide upper breast fullness to complete the natural perky appearance. Those decisions should be part of a lengthy discussion between the patient and her plastic surgeon.”

Regardless of whether patients are seeking breast surgery or another type of procedure, Dr. Scott adds patients should feel comfortable with their surgeon’s experience level, qualifications, and investment into their interests during the consultation. He adds that through the skilled hands of a passionate, board-certified plastic surgeon, patients can achieve natural and proportionate results that lead to increased self-confidence and a more positive outlook on life.

“It is very important that a patient only go to a plastic surgeon who is also a good listener. There is no procedure where it is more important to fully understand the patients goals and desired look than with breast augmentation and/or mastopexy. As a surgeon, I must first fully understand how each patient visualizes himself or herself appearing, and only then can I give him or her recommendations to accomplish those goals. It is important that patients leave the breast consultation with a good gut feeling that the plastic surgeon listened enough to fully understand and thus accomplish his or her desired goals.”

How to Age Well During the Holidays According to Sarasota Plastic Surgeons

According to recent statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), demand for plastic surgery procedures has increased by 9% since 2010 and over half of Americans surveyed now approve of cosmetic enhancement treatment. Sarasota plastic surgeons Dr. Jeff Scott and Dr. John Leikensohn say that as the holidays approach, plastic surgery procedures at their practice become more and more popular for patients seeking to combat the stress and keep their appearance healthy and rejuvenated. Drs. Scott and Leikensohn discuss tips for looking one’s best during the holidays while maintaining a youthful body and confident outlook on life through both healthy habits and procedures such as CoolSculpting® or dermal fillers.

At their center for plastic surgery in Sarasota, Dr. Jeff Scott and Dr. John Leikensohn say the holidays can be a crucial time for staying fit, healthy, and confident. With the coming social gatherings, gift exchanges, and holiday dining experiences, Dr. Leikensohn says many patients at The Plastic Surgery Center are opting for cosmetic procedures to help them boost their aesthetic appearance and rejuvenate their bodies. The latest study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reports that overall plastic surgery procedures have increased by 9% in the past year. The report also shows more than half of Americans (51%) now approve of cosmetic enhancements. Dr. Leikensohn adds that plastic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation can offer patients the chance to enhance their bodies and skin for the holiday season.

Dr. Leikensohn says with the stresses of the holidays looming, patients at his practice often elect to undergo a plastic surgery procedure to help them gain self-confidence and a more positive outlook on life going into the upcoming parties and holiday meals. Dr. Scott also adds that the holidays can give patients the extra motivational boost to undergo a procedure they have been considering for some time as a gift to themselves. In addition, Dr. Scott says, “The more common procedures approaching the holidays are less invasive, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport®, facial laser treatments, lip and facial fillers such as Juvederm®, or CoolSculpting® for non-invasive fat reduction. A certain number of patients are also interested in surgical procedures such as facelifts, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and liposuction/Smartlipo™ procedures because they have more time off from work during the holidays to recover.”

For patients who are not ready for a cosmetic enhancement procedure, Dr. Scott says that there are still plenty of ways to look and feel great during the holidays. He recommends eating right and exercising to stay healthy and feeling confident about one’s appearance. “Maintain a good exercise regimen which not only includes cardiovascular but also resistance work to maintain and increase muscle mass. Obviously a good healthy diet is important. I feel alcohol and caffeine in moderation is okay. Working on being happy and satisfied with yourself is important.”

Florida Cosmetic Surgeons discuss Board Certification Importance

At the Sarasota, FL plastic surgery practice, John Leikensohn, MD, FACS, and Jeff Scott, MD, FACS, recently discussed the importance of choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon when considering cosmetic enhancement or reconstructive surgery, such as breast augmentation, liposuction, or tummy tuck.

According to recent study conducted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the number of cosmetic enhancement procedures performed between 1997 and 2009 – including surgical and nonsurgical – increased 147%. As aesthetic surgery becomes more prevalent, Dr. Jeff Scott and Dr. John Leikensohn, board-certified plastic surgeons in Sarasota and Bradenton, FL, discuss the importance of board-certification in light of these statistics from ASAPS.

At the Plastic Surgery Center, which has two locations in Sarasota and Bradenton, FL, Dr. Leikensohn and Dr. Scott offer a variety of surgical and non-surgical procedures, ranging from BOTOX Cosmetic ® to breast augmentation. The doctors point out the increase in types of breast surgeries alone, and say the rigorous qualification process required by the American Board of Plastic Surgery ensures their patients receive the most effective plastic surgery results. They add that the education, training, and experience they gained during that process enables them to provide patients with safer care and the greatest chance at achieving their ultimate aesthetic enhancement goals, whether they are considering liposuction or a tummy tuck.

With over 10 million cosmetic enhancement procedures performed in the U. S. in 2009 alone, Dr. Leikensohn and Dr. Scott say that board certification is a necessary component for any significant life decision such as plastic surgery. Due to the challenging evaluation process, they add that they are uniquely qualified as plastic surgeons, which contributes to the overall safety of their patients at the Plastic Surgery Center in Sarasota and Bradenton, FL.
